Knicks Considering Reunion With Veteran Guard to Fill Final Roster Spot
The New York Knicks still have two open roster slots as the 2025 NBA offseason winds down — one expected to go to a rookie, the other to a veteran on a minimum deal. According to SNY’s Ian Begley, that veteran spot could very well go to a familiar face: Landry Shamet.
Knicks and Shamet Still Have Mutual Interest
On The Putback, Begley noted that Shamet remains firmly on New York’s radar.
“I’m talking about Shamet because I think there is still mutual interest there,” Begley said. “If I’m guessing, I’m guessing it ends up with Shamet getting one of those spots.”
Begley also mentioned that Shamet has strong support within the organization, thanks to how he handled his shoulder injury last season and the professionalism he displayed during his time in New York.

A Familiar Role for Shamet
If the Knicks finalize a deal, Shamet would be stepping back into a situation that looks a lot like last season. He’s already familiar with Madison Square Garden, the fan base, and most of the roster — but also with the challenge of cracking a set nine-man rotation.
Shamet did manage to earn minutes late in the year and played his way into the rotation during the Eastern Conference Finals. Heading into 2025-26, he’d once again be competing for playing time behind Jalen Brunson, Jordan Clarkson, and Deuce McBride.
Why Shamet Makes Sense
Even if he starts outside the rotation, Shamet checks boxes that make the signing logical:
- Shooting: A career 38.5% three-point shooter, Shamet brings reliable floor spacing and the ability to shoot off movement.
- Size and defense: At 6’4″, he adds length to New York’s guard rotation and can hold his own defensively.
- Experience: Having been through playoff runs with multiple teams, Shamet provides steady veteran presence in the locker room.
The drawback? He’s more of an off-ball guard than a true initiator, meaning more pressure would fall on McBride to handle backup playmaking duties.
Other Veteran Options on the Market
If talks with Shamet don’t materialize, the Knicks still have alternatives. Ben Simmons has been floated as a possible option, though his role is now closer to a wing. Other free agents like Malcolm Brogdon, Monte Morris, or a reunion with Cam Payne could also be in play.
Final Thoughts
For now, Landry Shamet appears to be the frontrunner for the Knicks’ final roster spot. His familiarity with the organization, combined with his proven shooting ability, makes him a logical fit — even if consistent minutes aren’t guaranteed.
Whether the Knicks choose Shamet or pivot to another veteran, how they use their last slot could shape the depth and flexibility of their guard rotation heading into the 2025-26 season.
