Knicks Get Clarity on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Future — For Now

The New York Knicks can officially put their Giannis Antetokounmpo dreams on hold — at least for the start of the 2025-26 season.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Milwaukee Bucks re-signed Thanasis Antetokounmpo to a guaranteed deal. Charania noted the move signals that after a summer of weighing options, Giannis will remain in Milwaukee to begin the year.

Normally, end-of-the-bench signings don’t dictate superstar decisions. But when the signing involves Giannis’ older brother, it’s a clear indicator that the Bucks know their MVP isn’t going anywhere — yet.

Knicks Expected Giannis to Stay Put

This development doesn’t blindside New York. The Knicks’ decision to lock up Mikal Bridges with an extension was a telltale sign they knew Giannis wasn’t leaving this summer.

Because of trade restrictions, Bridges cannot be moved for six months after signing, with his eligibility returning only days before the February 5 deadline. That essentially ruled him out of any offseason blockbuster package — and the Knicks wouldn’t have made that decision unless they were certain Giannis would stay in Milwaukee.

With zero first-round picks currently available to trade, Bridges was one of the Knicks’ most valuable chips. Without him, there was little chance of constructing a competitive offer this offseason.

Giannis Rumors Aren’t Going Away

Knicks fans shouldn’t view this as the end of the road. Even though Giannis begins the season in Milwaukee, there’s no guarantee he finishes it there.

If the Bucks underperform or struggle to contend, Giannis could reassess his future next summer. That’s when the Knicks’ options improve dramatically: they’ll finally have first-round picks to trade, Bridges will be movable, and their younger players will have built more value.

In short, the Knicks’ best chance at landing Giannis has always been a long-term play. His staying put now simply gives them more time to prepare.

The Bottom Line

The Bucks’ offseason moves, from stretching Damian Lillard to signing Myles Turner and reuniting Giannis with his brother, bought them at least another year of stability. For the Knicks, that’s not bad news — it’s just a pause button.

New York’s pursuit of Giannis isn’t over. If anything, their position to make a stronger offer grows with time.
