Bill Chisholm Becomes Official Boston Celtics Owner: What You Need to Know
The Boston Celtics now have a new official owner. Bill Chisholm, a longtime Celtics fan with a background in private equity, officially joined the organization on Tuesday morning after a deal first announced last March. The purchase was recently approved by the NBA Board of Governors, finalizing a transition that has been in the works for over a year.
A Historic $6.1 Billion Transaction
Chisholm leads a powerhouse investor group that includes:
- Wyc Grousbeck (longtime Celtics owner)
- Rob Hale
- Aditya Mittal (CEO of a global steel company)
- Bruce Beal
- Andrew Bialecki
- Dom Ferrante
- Mario Ho
- Ian Loring
- Sixth Street (global investment firm)
The purchase price totaled $6.1 billion, with $1 billion coming from Mittal’s investment, according to Sportico.
Leadership Roles and Governance
In the Celtics’ official press release, Chisholm was named Governor of the investor group, taking over a role initially planned for Wyc Grousbeck over the next three years. Grousbeck and Mittal will serve as Alternate Governors, while Grousbeck will continue as CEO, managing day-to-day operations alongside Chisholm.
“This truly is a dream come true for me and my family,” Chisholm said. “I feel so fortunate to be here as part of this new investor group, who are accomplished, driven people who care deeply about the Celtics and the Boston community. On behalf of our group, I am thrilled to partner with Wyc, Brad Stevens, and Rich Gotham to move this outstanding organization forward. We are committed to building on the legacy of the Celtics and raising banners, and I can’t wait for the team to get back out there this fall.”
Grousbeck, who has been the face of the ownership group for 23 years, expressed his excitement:
“The Celtics have been my life’s work for the past 23 years. This incredible ride is now continuing. I am fired up to be shoulder to shoulder with Bill as we pull every lever to go after another banner. There is nothing better than winning.”
